Glossary

Leaf
The part of the frame that can be opened, or fixed, on which the window pane or panel is mounted.

Swing-leaf
Frame opened by wing and transom.

Semi-fastened leaf
Hinged leaf fastened by bolts.

Spindle
Metal profile connected to handle which fastens opening leaf to fixed frame.

Shutter
Rotation of leaf round hinge situated on vertical profiles of fixed frame.

Sill
The projecting part of profile that allows joining of two profiles for overlapping.

Bascule Window
Rotation of leaf, vertically or horizontally, taking place around hinges in the centre of profiles on fixed frame.

Window shutter box
Container for roller and rolling blind.

Bolt
Mechanism for fastening a leaf consisting of a sliding pin.

Hinge
The pins around which the mobile leaf is mounted.

Counter-sill
Horizontal profile connected to the lower head-frame of the sash frame

Sash frame
Group of profiles connecting the door or window to wall cavity

Staff bead
Profile covering joint of fixed frame to wall or two fixed frames.

Cremone Bolt
System made up of handle and moving mechanisms of spindles and pins for opening and closing of windows.

Window sill
Facing of lower part of wall opening.

Spacer
Part situated on uprights of fixed frame that connects it to the fixed frame guide.

Spindle stopper or check
Part which blocks the spindle to fixed frame or door-step.

Door-stop
Part limiting the opening of a door and provides blocking in a certain position.

Metalwork
Metal accessories used for assembly, moving and installation of door or window.

Joint
Meeting of two or more components in doors and windows without use of joining material.

Open joint
System whereby sill profiles form an air-chamber between the internal pressure and window exterior.

Joint that can be opened
Joint where two or more elements that can be opened meet.

Weatherboard
Horizontal part that permits water drainage and thus protects window.

Sealing
Ensures impermeability of window to water, air and noise.

Sliding Guide
A U profile, situated at sides of window opening, in which the roller-blind slats run.  If this is situated along the horizontal sides it is used for movement of sliding shutters.

Surrounding parts of opening

Frame
Part of the building applied to the wall or supporting structure.

Architectural or window opening light
Clear-cut/net dimension of opening fitted with framing.

Handle
Part for hand opening system of door or window.

Reveal or Parapet
Part of the wall opening framing which serves to accommodate the frame.

Upright
Vertical profile of fixed or mobile frame.

Coupling Upright
Vertical profile joining two frames or two sash frames.

Sill Upright
A window leaf upright.

Middle Upright
Vertical profile of frame or sash frame

Opening Perimeter
Overall perimeter measure of opening space.

French door
Made up of French door and a window.

Rail
Secondary profile for vertical or horizontal division of frames.

Water drip
Inserted in horizontal profiles, collects water from condensation or infiltration and permits evacuation.

Bead
Profile for blocking glass or panels on contact with window, when not built-in.

Doors and Windows
System of frames, panels and accessories separating two rooms.
Considered external when two areas have different weather conditions, and internal when conditions are the same in both areas.

Shading systems
Combined parts that prevent penetration of light, internally or externally.

Door-step
Lower horizontal part of opening of French door.

Jambs
Vertical parts of opening

Surfaces that can be opened
Movable surface parts of opening.  Conventionally equivalent to movable surface parts visible from the inside.

Thermic shear
A separating part in plastic that prevents contact between two frames (internal and external) when these are both in alluminium.

Glass Plugs
Parts of various shapes for shimming of glass in metal frames.  Used in insulating glass from contact transmitted by profile.

Fixed Frame
Parts of profiles connecting sash-frames and mobile frames.

Mobile Frame
Pars of profiles made up of movable parts of doors and windows.

Transom
Horizontal profile of frames.  Can be fixed or mobile.

Sill Transom
Lower horizontal profile of window.

Door-step Transom
Lower horizontal profile of door.

Opening
Opening in wall accommodating fitting.

Staple/Clamp 
Metal part for fixing sash frame or fixed frame to supporting wall structure.

Baseboard
Profile or system of profiles and plates situated in lower part of door or window.
